It was so much fun watching these two together. They are truly the best of friends, and were so excited to be beginning their new life together. It was also sweet to see the bond Chrissy had with her family. Her Mom, sisters, and Dad all had to fight off tears when they saw Chrissy for the first time in her dress. Her first look with her Dad even had me getting emotional!

After their ceremony, family and friends joined them at the Akron Community Center for an amazing reception. An epic dancing entrance by the groom, a personal and unique first dance song for the couple, and a classy, choreographed father-daughter dance made Chrissy and Vince's reception extra special. However, it was especially great to see the bride's face light up when she witnessed what her family had planned for her. Apparently Chrissy had a dream in the past that everyone danced to the Safety Dance at her wedding. Not wanting to pass up on that opportunity, all eight of her siblings and their families learned the dance and surprised her with their performance. Her reaction was priceless!

I had so much fun with this couple and wish them the best in their new life together!

Travis + Ashlie | Rochester, IN Wedding The forecast called for a 100% chance of thunderstorms all day for Travis and Ashlie's outdoor wedding here in Rochester. While I know the forecast often changes, I wanted to be prepared for the potential foul weather, so I rush-ordered a beautiful, clear umbrella for the couple to use for portraits. Well, it turns out the best way to improve the weather is to be prepared for it. The day before the wedding, the rain disappeared completely, and it was to be sunshine all day! What a change!

Although this couple caught a lovely break from the weather, unfortunately there was another event that made their day bittersweet. The groom lost his grandmother unexpectedly just days before the wedding. Although it broke the hearts of everyone who knew her, their families were able to pull together in support and love to make the day a great one for Travis and Ashlie. This couple planned an elegant, yet rustic outdoor ceremony on their land complete with greenery and a gorgeous arch constructed from curtains. As they said their vows, their families and friends looked on from their homemade log seating, and the evening light streamed through the trees, shining down on the couple. In that moment as I was shooting, I couldn't help but think that it was the groom's Grandma, watching with delight from her new seat. It couldn't have been more beautiful.

I felt so privileged to be a part of this stunning wedding. Travis and Ashlie are so kind, and together they make one of the sweetest couples I've encountered. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Smith!

Chris + Jenny | Rochester, Indiana Wedding I adored Jenny the minute I first met her inside Jarrety's Place early last Spring. We sat down to discuss all of her wedding and engagement photography plans, and the conversation came incredibly easy, as if we had known each other for years. When I met her fiancé, Chris and her son at their engagement session, it was apparent that the two were an incredible match for each other. Jenny knows just what to say to Chris to make him laugh, and they seem to balance each other's personalities, Jenny being very outgoing and talkative, and Chris is quiet and a bit reserved. When you put them together, it's a perfect combination.

Jenny and Chris had their wedding at Jenny's home church, the St. Joseph Catholic Church, here in Rochester. Their ceremony was beautiful with both the bride and groom getting emotional as Jenny came down the aisle with her Dad. Their reception followed at The Back Forty in Bourbon. Jenny wanted to save the majority of her photos for after the ceremony to utilize The Back Forty's outdoor landscape. Her decision was fine by me! The woods offered a lovely backdrop, and close to sunset I took Jenny and Chris out to the pond for their portraits together. It was a lovely moment for the both of them to have some time alone together. I'm so pleased to have been invited to be a part of their special day. Congratulations to the new Branscom Family!

Sleeklens Portrait Perfection Review Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about ways of improving my workflow. I’m always looking for methods of speeding up my editing process without sacrificing quality, and the quicker I can get a client’s images back to them for viewing, it’s a win in my book! It was quite the coincidence then when Sleeklens contacted me last week about testing their action sets. In case you’re not familiar with the term, an action set is a set of steps in Photoshop or Lightroom that can be downloaded or created and recorded, then repeated over and over with the simple push of a button. They can be extremely helpful and time-saving to a photographer if there is a set of edits that they complete every time to achieve the look they desire.

I must admit, I was hesitant at first to try Sleeklens' actions. I’ve always enjoyed creating and using my own actions in order to create the look I love. I feel that there is an importance to knowing how to manually edit a photo rather than simply pushing a button and calling it good.  However, I wondered if there was something I could be missing?

To start, I tried Sleeklens' All in One and Base actions from the Portrait Perfection Workflow. The action sets went through numerous adjustments and changes at once and then flattened the image. I imagine these sets would be quick and easy to use if it gave you the exact look you wanted, but I personally would prefer to have more control over the edits. From there, I tested the more individualized actions such as Temperature, Exposure, Retouching, Enhancement and Web File Preparation. This is where I began to see the value, and could actually picture myself using a few of these actions more than the All in One sets.

In the end, I’m pleased that I decided to try out the Portrait Perfection Collection. Even though I was already implementing similar actions that I had created from my own editing process, there were a few that streamlined the process more than my own. Also, I can foresee these being very helpful for photographers who are just beginning to become comfortable with using Photoshop. For example, perhaps they know there is a color adjustment they need to make to their image, but just can’t seem to find that special tweak that makes it work. They can simply choose the action that best suits their needs, adjust the opacity and be done. In doing this, they can also study the action steps and learn the manual process of the edit as well. In conclusion, these actions are very helpful and thorough, and I would recommend them if you’re looking to speed up your workflow.

Ren + Staci | Rochester, Indiana Wedding I had been looking forward to Ren and Staci's wedding ever since these two rocked their engagement session back in April. I arrived at the salon first to grab a few photos of the girls getting ready, then we all headed to the groom's parent's property where the wedding was taking place. The anticipation was building for the bride and groom while we sought a private, first look location for them. We settled on a grassy trail in the woods, and Ren turned around promising not to peek. When Staci approached and tapped his shoulder, the reaction on his face was one for the books. Their excitement was ridiculously sweet!

After portraits were complete, the couple had their perfect outdoor ceremony with friends and families looking on. Most outdoor ceremonies I've photographed are gorgeous and laid-back, but this one in particular had an especially unique touch. To showcase their unity, some couples light a candle, some mix sand, but Ren and Staci decided to mix their favorite beers! Their guests applauded, loving the personalized idea! These entertaining moments carried on into the reception through the wedding party introductions, toasts, the dollar dance and a surprise appearance by "well-dressed" guest, who's photos I won't dare post on this blog! Those who attended know the reason. Ren and Staci's wedding was lovely and fun, a perfect celebration for this beautiful couple. It was truly a pleasure capturing their wedding day.

Kyle + Jessica | Rochester, Indiana Wedding The anticipation was building when I arrived at the Lakeside Cabin at Geneva Center to photograph Jessica and the girls having their hair styled. Emotions weren't easy to hide as the girls readied to celebrate the first of their friends to tie the knot. Once Jessica's hair was complete, she and a few of her bridesmaids went to have a peek in the mirror. I followed them in to find big smiles and happy tears streaming for all of them.

After the girls were complete, I proceeded down to photograph Kyle and the guys, and then guided Kyle over to the first look location in front of the reflecting pond. Jessica approached from behind escorted by her maids on the golf cart, and when she tapped her groom's shoulder the reactions were priceless. Kyle and Jessica embraced in a heartfelt hug, truly blissful to be marrying their best friend. After the two had some time to themselves, we began their portraits together. I had to tease the couple just a bit because before we began they claimed that they had never taken good pictures. "You're sure fooling me!" I told them. Kyle replied with, "Well, I'll bet we're taking good ones today because we're so happy."

The hugs and happy tears continued through the ceremony when the couple shared their vows and wed under the pavilion with their friends and family looking on. Everyone traveled to Akron to the Community Center to celebrate their reception which was beautifully decorated with lights intertwined with outdoor elements such as natural logs, succulents and ferns. Everything on their wedding day was perfect for this couple, as it should be for two people as sweet as them. Enjoy this peek into their big day.

Kristie & Nate's Engagement We had planned Kristie and Nate's engagement session for an evening this summer. However, with the thunderstorms on the radar approaching and looking imminent, we decided to make a last minute decision to move the session up a few hours. We were disappointed to miss our sunset plans, but the photos still turned out gorgeous and fun! We had chosen a pretty location on the river surrounded by trees to match the couple's laid-back vibe. Nate brought along his beloved truck to incorporate and these two had a blast just laughing, flirting and being adorable. Something tells me it comes natural to them. They truly were up for anything which made the session a blast. I can't wait to work with them again for their wedding next summer.

Addie & Noah | A Sibling Session I have always loved working with Addie and Noah. Aside from a short bout of shyness on Noah's part at the beginning of the session, these two littles love the camera and each other! Their interactions with one another are incredibly sweet, and their bond is a beautiful thing to witness. It's apparent how much Noah looks up to and adores his big sister, and Addie seems to be great at teaching and looking out for her little brother. They weren't shy about sharing hugs, playing and laughing together. It truly made this photographer's day, and made for some amazing memories for their parents to cherish!

The Ogle Family Darci contacted me this summer to redeem her gift certificate from this past Christmas that she had received from her Mom. She shared her vision to have the session on some property near her home, and she described the location as being filled with wildflowers, tall grass and thousands of blooming sunflowers. I could hardly wait! When I arrived for the session, I unfortunately learned that the sunflowers had finished early and were no longer in their prime, but we still found plenty of gorgeous spots to use as backgrounds for the family. These three were so kind, friendly and a lot of fun to work with. Their daughter was soon beginning college, and I could tell that these photos would be very special to her Mom. Enjoy this peek into the Ogle's family session.

Lane's One Year Session It was bittersweet when Lane came to see me for his one year session. I had been photographing Lane since he was three months old, and his Watch Me Sprout Package was coming to an end. It was so much fun to see how much he had changed between sessions, both physically and in his interactions. The smiles I was able to coax from him during his one year session were heartwarming, and slightly ornery! Lane's Mom always brought the coolest and most meaningful props along to incorporate, making for some very sweet photos for their family to cherish.

Patrick + Samantha | Argos, Indiana I was slightly disappointed as I traveled to Samantha's parent's house to begin their wedding photography coverage. The forecast threatened thunderstorms lasting the entire duration of the wedding day, and the bride and groom had planned a gorgeous outdoor ceremony. However, I kept my head high and knew no matter what that it would turn out beautifully.

The rain continued as we photographed the details and the girls getting ready. Then, something remarkable happened. On our way to the ceremony and reception site just before portraits began, the skies brightened, the radar cleared, and it was to be clear skies for the rest of the day! I was thrilled for Samantha and Patrick! They were able to have their lovely ceremony overlooking the sunflower fields and rolling grassy hills. With the sun shining down, this sweet couple said their vows and were happily cheered on by friends, family and their adorable son who took on the ring bearer role.

Their reception followed in the red barn with some impressive dancing by the wedding guests and hilarious shenanigans during the garter toss! Those who were there know how it went down! Patrick and Samantha's wedding couldn't have been more gorgeous, and I feel like one lucky photographer to have been chosen to capture it. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, and thank you!

Chelsea + Brad | Akron, IN Wedding I pulled into the parking lot of the secluded, little church where Chelsea and Brad would soon be married. Inside, the bride and her ladies were readying for the events ahead with hair and makeup. As I entered to begin shooting, I was greeted with big smiles and a warm welcome. Weddings are always especially fun when the families and wedding party treat you as if they've known you for years. After moving seamlessly through portraits, guests began to arrive and take their seats, and before long, Chelsea was walking down the aisle towards her future. (Whoa! That was deep, wasn't it?) :) Brad and Chelsea have been together for years, are two peas in a pod and the best of friends, so it was especially sweet for their families and friends to watch them finally say their vows to one another. After the ceremony, they had a fun and lively celebration just down the road at the Akron Community Center. Brad and Chelsea's wedding was creative, perfect and lovely, everything a gal would want to photograph. ;) It was a pleasure to be a part of it.

Brooke + Ethan | Logansport, IN Wedding I had looked forward to returning once again to Diamonds and Dust to photograph Brooke and Ethan's rustic outdoor wedding. The grounds were beautiful, and I always adore a classic red barn. The weather, however, had made alternative plans for the day. The showers began in the morning and showed no signs of ceasing. Indoors it was, and luckily the barns' interior was beautiful and adorned with country decor and twinkling lights.

The couple didn't seem to let the rain dampen their day and were just as sweet and laid back as during their engagement session. Their ceremony was flawless and beautiful, and the reception celebratory and fun. During the reception we were granted a short break in the down pour, so we took advantage and captured a few natural light portraits of Brooke and Ethan. The moments outdoors rounded out the day perfectly and allowed them a little time to themselves.

Even though the day didn't completely go as planned, Brooke and Ethan had their perfect wedding, and I felt so privileged to work with them and capture their special moments.

You'll be seeing these two love birds again. I'm photographing their wedding in October! :)

Vanessa's First Birthday Session Vanessa brought along her sweet smile to her First Birthday Session last month. Her hair and eyes were still the perfect blonde and blue that I remembered from photographing her six month session before Christmas. We began her session in a local park where Dad pulled up his old car to use as a prop. Vanessa loved standing in the driver's seat, playing with the steering wheel and checking out the local scene. Next we headed back to my place for the cake smash portion of Vanessa's session. She wasn't quite sure at first, approaching the cake multiple times in both a crawling and walking position. Once she got started on the frosting though, there was no going back.

Quinley's One Year Session As a lot of you know, I have a three year old son. Therefore, when I have the opportunity to photograph baby girls with all the ruffles, pink, lace and flower headbands, I'm over the moon. I felt this way about Baby Quinley's one year session when her Mom dressed her in a romper that encompassed all of the above details. Quinley had beautiful, dark brown eyes and adored being outside. The smiles truly emerged when Grandma brought out the family's antique blocks, a favorite toy of Quinley's. This session was a blast, and I'm so excited to be photographing this little one again in the Fall when she takes on her role as Flower Girl in a wedding.

Ethan's 18 Month Session The fact that I'm writing Ethan's 18 month blog has me baffled and just a bit sad. These little ones grow so quickly and I feel so thankful for having the opportunity to document the sweet little changes as the years pass. For this session, I met Ethan and his Mom at their house so we could get a few outdoor shots in the grass before taking Ethan and his pedal tractor out into the family's recently planted field. After a gold fish snack and a fair bit of running, Ethan changed into his overalls and we preceded into the corn. Just like a good little farmer, Ethan climbed off his tractor to check the soil.... dry. Perhaps that's why so much dirt covered the poor child's face when he tripped on a row. "That's okay!" I said to Mom. "That's the life of a farmer. Let's capture the reality of it."

The Garner Family Session I was very much looking forward to working with the Garner Family once again. I had photographed their daughter, Mallorey, last year for her third birthday, and she was sweet, fun and had a blast posing. This year was no exception! The family arrived coordinated in one of my favorite colors, and Mallorey and her Mom even had matching shoes! It could have possibly been one of the cutest things I've seen, and I see a lot of cute things! (Remember, I photograph babies and folks in love.) As always it was an absolute pleasure, and I hope to see these three again soon.

The Eaton Family I drove out to the corner of an old country road to meet Missy and her son for their session. Missy mostly wanted photos of her son, Jarhett, on his own but wanted to attempt to get a family shot with both of their dogs, one of which is young and very high-spirited. Hmmm ....challenge accepted. While it took a bit of work and a few "practice" photos as you can imagine, in the end we were able to capture a nice shot of the four of them together.

After those photos were complete, Jarhett became the star and had a blast doing photos with his canine brothers. We then moved around the yard to all of his favorite places for his photos on his own. This brown-eyed cutie doesn't go anywhere without his hat and boots, so what better way to capture him? It was such a pleasure working with this sweet, laid-back family, and I can hardly wait for future sessions.

An Evening with Flirt Boutique Have you ever heard that famous expression, "Girls just want to have fun?" I'm here to tell you folks's truth.

I met up with the girls of Flirt Boutique here in Rochester, Indiana for a photo shoot this past month. All eight ladies stepped out looking flawlessly fabulous in their coordinated dresses. We walked the downtown streets until we found the perfect brick backdrop to showcase their attire. We then proceeded to take bets on how many honks these beauties would receive during the photos. I can't remember who won the bet, but it was whichever gal guessed the highest number.

After a quick wardrobe change, we all proceeded to a private field filled with purple wildflowers, the perfect scene for their new looks. We had so much fun picking flowers, twirling and laughing together. What better way to spend an evening with your best girls?

Want to know the best part about shooting a session for Flirt Boutique? It's delivering their photos to the store and therefore having an excuse to do a little shopping. ;) Enjoy these kind, smart, gorgeous girls' session.

Jenny + Chris | Rochester, IN Engagement I had been looking forward to this engagement session ever since talking with the future bride, Jenny, during our first meeting. Jenny told me her story and revealed some of the hardships she's been through in recent years. What was incredibly sweet was when she explained how thankful she was to have found Chris, and how wonderful he is to Jenny and her son. It makes my heart swell to recall her words.

In the evening when the sunlight was just turning to honey, Jenny, Chris and their son joined me to capture a few family photos before beginning some shots of just the couple. The little man was adorable and did a fantastic job of holding his sign. We all had a blast, and I adored the amount of laughter these three can produce when they're together. I'm very much looking forward to this wedding next year!
